What is Leisure EducationĀ
Leisure education is a transformative process that encourages us to explore our leisure attitudes, motivators, and interests. It empowers us to develop a meaningful leisure lifestyle by discovering potential opportunities and resources. Through leisure education, we gain self-awareness, expand our leisure knowledge and skills, foster social connections, and cultivate autonomy and competence in whatever leisure activities we decide to pursue.Ā
Itās important to note that leisure education is supported by positive psychology, specifically the PERMA Model of human flourishing, which emphasizes positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and accomplishment. Leisure education helps individuals experience positive and fulfilling leisure experiences. Positive psychology recognizes that leisure and flow are vital components of human flourishing, contributing to a sense of joy, purpose, and personal growth.
The Leisure Education Process
Although it all may appear to be fun and games, the leisure education process is systematic and encompasses a few elements that support us in developing a meaningful leisure lifestyle:Ā
- Leisure Awareness: Leisure education involves gaining a deeper understanding of one’s own leisure attitudes, preferences, and motivations. It encourages self-reflection and self-discovery, allowing us to explore their interests, values, and the role of leisure in their lives.
- Social Interaction Skills. Leisure education helps individuals build the necessary social skills to engage in leisure activities with others. It fosters effective communication, teamwork, and collaboration, enhancing social connections and promoting a sense of belonging in leisure settings.Ā
- Leisure Activity Skill: Leisure education encompass learning and improving specific skills related to chosen leisure pursuits. Whether it’s playing a musical instrument, participating in sports, or engaging in creative hobbies, developing competence in leisure activities enhances enjoyment and satisfaction.Ā
- Leisure Knowledge & Resources: Leisure education includes information about available leisure opportunities, facilities, programs, and community resources that support and enhance leisure experiences. Understanding and accessing appropriate resources empower individuals to make informed choices and maximize their leisure engagement.
Benefits of Leisure EducationĀ
So why engage in leisure education? Because it offers benefits that contribute to our quality of life!
- Self-Awareness: Leisure education helps us gain a deeper understanding of our leisure attitudes, motivators, and interests. For instance, do we believe that engaging in a leisure activity is a worthwhile pursuit or do we believe we should spend our time on something more productive? Answering questions like this through the leisure education process promotes self-reflection and self-discovery, allowing us to explore our passions, values, and unique leisure preferences.
- Knowledge and Skills Development: Through leisure education, we acquire knowledge and skills related to leisure activities. We learn about different leisure opportunities, resources, and techniques that can enhance our leisure experiences. For instance, if playing pickleball is an interest of yours, learning about the sport by taking an Intro to Pickleball class at your local recreation center would be a way you could develop both your knowledge and skills.Ā
- Autonomy: Leisure education fosters a sense of autonomy and personal agency in leisure pursuits. It encourages us to take ownership of our leisure time, make intentional choices, and create a balance between obligations and leisure activities. We all have 24 hours in a day, when we take time to actively craft our leisure lifestyles we begin to see how we could mold obligations and shift our priorities.
- Social Connections: Leisure education provides opportunities for us to connect with others who share similar interests and hobbies. It promotes social interactions, collaboration, and the formation of meaningful relationships. By engaging in leisure activities with others, we can enhance our social well-being, build a sense of belonging, and create lasting connections.
Throughout my career, I have taken multiple shots at Leisure Education programming. Some admittedly more successful than others – but such is the life of a programmer. One of my all-time favorite programs I have facilitated as a recreation therapist was one called LIFE – Leisure Independence for Everyone. Leisure education is often provided by a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) who is formally trained and has the necessary skills to create and implement leisure education programs. Leisure education can happen in both a group setting or individually – depending on the assessed needs.
